Liv Tyler believed for long that that rocker Todd Rundgren was her father. But the striking resemblance between herself and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler raised some disturbing queries in her mind and she ultimately discovered that Tyler was indeed her biological father. So, at 12, she decided to change her surname to Tyler. Beginning her career as a model, Tyler made her film debut in Silent Fall in 1994. Although her next project, Empire Records (1995) was a failure she won critical acclaim for her performance in Heavy the same year.

Her most significant breakthrough came in 1996 when she starred in Bernardo Bertolucci’s Stealing Beauty. After Stealing Beauty, her popularity soared. She began to appear on magazine covers and was one of People's "50 Most Beautiful" in 1997. The huge success of the film ensured that she gave up modeling, becoming in the process just an ‘actress’ instead of a ‘model-actress.’
In 1998 she played the role of Bruce Willis' daughter and Ben Affleck's girlfriend in Armageddon that proved to be a huge box-office success. Lord of the Rings gave her yet another taste of success. She took lessons in sword fighting for her role as Arwen in the film, but the script was later changed and her preparation went in vain.
A dyslexic and vegetarian, Tyler married Royston Langden in Barbados on March 25, 2003. They were blessed with a son, Milo on December 14, 2004. Before marriage, Tyler dated Joaquin Phoenix from 1996 to 1998.
She was nicknamed Liv Taylor by film journalists because her dark hair and blue eyes reminded them of Elizabeth Taylor. She was cast in Aerosmith’s video for "Crazy" purely on the basis of her Pantene commercial, with absolutely no knowledge that her father was a member of the band. “Crazy,” in which Tyler co-starred with Alicia Silverstone, was ranked 23rd in VH1's top 100 music videos of all time.
